Lipsi is a social networking application that lets you send and receive messages without revealing your identity. Since its launching in 2017, this messaging app has steadily climbed its way to most app stores’ top free apps chart.
Chat Anyone Nearby
Unlike popular messaging apps such as Messenger, Skype, and WhatsApp, Lipsi lets you chat with another person without needing to add them to your contacts. It is a location-based software that only requires the users to be within the radius of each other to start their conversation. If anyone who uses the app is near - about 100 yards - he or she will automatically show up on your list.
Once you started chatting someone, you can remain anonymous unless you choose to reveal your identity. Lipsi also allows users to clear a conversation. By doing so, you can delete the entire chat history for you and the person you are chatting with making your account anonymous once again. Additionally, you can set up your profile to Ghost mode which makes your account invisible. You will not show up in some users search results, even if you are within their radius. However, you can still start new conversations and continue existing ones.
Lipsi is free to download and use and is for users 18 years old and above only. However, the app does not have any age verification tool and only requires you to tap a button to “verify” that you are of legal age when you register.
Anonymous Feedback
Besides chatting anyone in your vicinity, Lipsi also gives you a way to send and receive anonymous feedback to your Instagram posts. Upon registration, the app will provide your Lipsi link which you can post in your bio. Anyone can access this link and send you anonymous feedback on any, and all of your posts.
While it may be a way to receive positive reviews and even constructive criticism about your profile, this integration feature seems like a perfect recipe for cyberbullying. It can pose an issue if the users do not have their Instagram profile set to private. Anyone who comes across your profile can use the link to submit feedback, be it trolling, spammy, or even bullying in nature. And since the app can send any message without revealing the identity of the sender, it can even be used as a tool for stalking and harassment.
Use with Utmost Caution
Being anonymous anytime certainly makes Lipsi a hit for younger mobile users. By providing a way to talk to somebody without revealing your identity makes it exciting, especially for teens. But this anonymity also breeds problems, especially bullying and harassment. The app does not filter negative and positive messages. And while they go to great lengths trying to keep abusive messages away from the app, they definitely cannot stop people from unkind behavior. So, when you want to be a part of the Lipsi community, it is imperative to use the app with utmost caution.
